"Godfather Of AI" Quits Google Job, Warns Of Danger To Humanity

On Monday he officially joined a growing chorus of critics who say those companies are racing toward danger with their aggressive campaign to create products based on generative artificial intelligence, the technology that powers popular chatbots like ChatGPT. Dr. Hinton said he has quit his job at Google, where he has worked for more than a decade and became one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of A.I. A part of him, he said, now regrets his life's work.

While AI apologists of all stripes claim that AI will revolutionize the world for the better and promise that it will lead to breakthroughs in medicine, crime prevention, poverty, psychology, and even death, Hinton and others who have been in the AI trenches for years warn that humanity is prying the lid off of Pandora's box.

Hinton seems to have arrived - albeit a little late - to the same conclusion as others who have issued concerned warnings about AI. In fact, while his departure from Google is admirable in its own right, since he quit his job to set himself free to warn the world of the monster he helped create, he does remind this writer of a scene from the original Jurassic Park film.

Google spent $44 million to acquire a company started by Dr. Hinton and his two students.

Hinton came to realize that as AI continues surpassing the human brain in some areas, the danger of AI increases: "Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now. Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That's scary."

While Hinton says that Google kept a "Proper" stewardship of AI until last year, all bets were off once Microsoft began to challenge Google's dominance in the field by using an AI chatbot to crank up Bing results.

Hinton warns that with free-range AI creating content - which the Times says includes "False photos, videos and text" - humanity is heading to a place where the average person will "Not be able to know what is true anymore."
