Few unarmed people of any race are killed by police officers. The vast majority of black people dying violent deaths are being killed by the same folks. And it may have been Tyre Nichols yesterday; it could be you or anyone else tomorrow. And we need to address public safety for everyone.
Defining Public Safety
- Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Ill.) defines public safety as the inability of the police to provide public safety for everyone else.
The Black Lives Matter movement and the allied criminal justice reform movement which opened jails and decriminalized crimes led to a nearly 30% surge in murders in 2020
- Black perpetrators were responsible for 50% of the murders despite making up only 13% of population
- White people and Latinos accounted for 3,981 homicides or 34%
- American Indians and Asians for only 65 murders
It has nothing to do with racism, systemic or otherwise, just ask those "Asian-American brothers and sisters" who live with this.
- The only answer anyone has come up with to this is using the police to prevent the worst of it
- Thousands of deaths. That can escalate to tens of thousands.. No magical thinking, gun control, root causes, systemic racism or critical race theory is coming to fix this.
