CALL FOR COMMUNITY RELICS
Public Art Chattanooga has commissioned world-renowned artist Meg Saligman to create a monumental mural on the AT&T Building at 300 East M.L. King Boulevard in Chattanooga. The mural will be created through an inclusive and collaborative process. Looking, listening, sharing, and collaborating are inseparable from the paint, the place, and the form. Please join our creative dialogue!
We are currently seeking relics and symbolic objects from the community to include in our design. What kind of relics? We are looking for any personal keepsakes, special heirlooms, or even mundane objects that embody and represent your responses to the questions below.
There are no wrong answers here! We’re looking for initial thoughts and ideas, so there’s no need to carefully craft your sentences. We simply want to hear your story. This is a dialogue.
DOCUMENTING THE RELICS
One of the artists must photograph your relic so it can be considered for inclusion in the mural. There are two ways to make this happen:
1. Come to Relic Day, May 28th, along with your relic(s). We will have a photo booth set up and you will get to hear the stories of others along with telling your own. You will be able to take your object with you when you leave the event. The event is 5pm-7pm at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. ML King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN.
2. Drop-off your relic at the studio location. We will photograph the object and return it to you within 7 days. We will sign an agreement ensuring your object will make it back to you promptly and unscathed. Drop-off to Hollie Berry, 10am-4pm, Chattanooga WorkSpace, 302 W 6th St., Studio 4B, Chattanooga, TN.
While all relics will influence and inspire the mural, we do not guarantee that all relics will be included in the final artwork.
QUESTIONS
1. What is your personal connection to M.L. King Blvd and/or Chattanooga at large?
2. What is the greatest gift the city of Chattanooga has given to you personally? Something of its land? Of its history? Of its people?
3. Do you have an object that makes you think about that gift every time you see it?
4. Chattanooga is incredibly resilient. What is the biggest hurdle the city has overcome? What is the biggest hurdle that Chattanooga has yet to overcome?
5. Consider a relic of the past that represents a time of struggle. Now consider a relic of the future – what will represent Chattanooga going forward?
6. What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen within the city of Chattanooga limits (person, place, or thing). Describe how it looks and feels.
Thanks so much for your help and we hope to see you May 28th!
